Clothes

Clothes: (n) items worn to cover the body.

“The clothes make the man.” Unless she’s a woman.

Why do the clothes make anything?

Here’s the truth:  clothes look very good on people who would look very good without them.

If you do not look very good without clothes, draping cloth over you does not do a lot to jazz your appearance.

It can communicate wealth. I suppose it can pass along the image of style. But if you look fairly rotund without clothing, clothing is like putting drapes on a wide window.

People who are slender can put on a suit and look very proficient and businesslike. People who are portly always have to worry about whether they should unbutton the coat when they sit, for fear of launching a button.

Women who are lean can wear a dress and make it look pretty much look like the hanger it was hung upon, while women who are more “Greek” in their shape can take a perfectly lovely dress and make it appear very broad at the beam.

We are happy to wear clothes simply because they hide a multitude of fleshly sins. Yet there is no outfit that can completely disguise what lies within.

I’ve spent a lot of money on clothes and I’ve spent a little money on clothes–and at the end, the tally was, “what you see is basically what you get.”

Bride

Bride: (n) a woman on her wedding day

In the pursuit of masculinity, we have generated a flailing femininity.Dictionary B

On the wedding day, the man wears a suit and the woman a frilly white dress, to establish her virgin promise.

We propagate the notion that femininity is desirable, but in the mainstream of life efforts, it ends up being powerless.

For instance, the wedding ceremony itself is an expression of man’s dominance:

  • He gets to remain “man” and she must become “wife.”
  • She ceases to have a human identity, but instead is projected into the role of trailing behind, stepping within his larger footprints.
  • It is required of her to forsake her name and take on the role of incubator for the human race, while simultaneously remaining alluring, able to provide meals and and launder all dirty stains.

The interesting thing to me is that when the Good Book refers to the “Bride of Christ”–the church–it does not portray such neediness. Matter of fact, we’re told that the church is supposed to “destroy the gates of hell.”

There may be nothing wrong with putting a white dress on a woman at a wedding, as long as we understand that the next day both man and woman don the same work clothes.

Brazen

Brazen: (adj) bold and without shame

Up to this year, I would have sworn or even argued that the word “brazen” could not be used except for referring to a “hussy.”

And a hussy, in this context, points to a woman having an extraordinary appetite for naughtiness.Dictionary B

But after I experienced the political climate that infested our country, I will tell you that “brazen” does not require a tube top and a foul mouth. It works just as well with an overly expensive suit or a pantsuit.

We were led to believe that virtue, kindness, consideration and courtesy are optional. These ideas of common ground and gentility were presented to us as signs of weakness rather than the building blocks of strength.

We talked about affairs, chauvinism, racism, lying, cheating and deceit as if they were a badge of honor to establish acclaim for a well-seasoned practitioner of politics.No one stopped to ask what such activities would breed in the hearts of the common man and woman.

So we stand back, a little astounded that people are a bit more surly and considerably more apathetic. Maybe they don’t choose to become as brazen as the front-runners of the political parties, but they have adopted some of the nastiness and made it their own.

So it falls the lot of sane men and women everywhere to kindly, but purposefully, challenge surliness and awaken the indifferent. It is a work that should have been unnecessary had we been offered wizened souls.

But since we weren’t, it is the new mission of the angels.
